Working with designers such as Tom Ford, Dawn Mello and most recently Alessandro Michele, Gucci continues to be the go-to for glamour and glitter. Gucci’s name and insignia became a symbol of stature. Starlets began sporting Gucci dresses to awards ceremonies and other high-profile events, giving them an untouchable status. Their opulent, rich, uncompromising style was the epitome of Hollywood, a style everyone wished to emulate. The world’s rich and famous took note, and began wearing the brand’s designs to public outings causing a surge in popularity for Gucci. The brand branched into lines of ready-to-wear, comprised of Gucci trousers, tops, shoes, skirts, suits and other items. Gucci’s Move To High-FashionĪfter the death of Guccio Gucci in 1953, his sons took over the brand and began to transform it from family-run label to high-fashion giant. Guccio passed away in 1953, leaving his name to Italy’s most beloved fashion house. His items were a hit amongst Italy’s aristocracy, leading them to be named “Official Supplier To The Italian Royal Household”. He founded the house of Gucci in Florence in 1920, selling ornate travel cases, bags and leather accessories. Impressed by the calibre of the guests’ travel trunks, he was inspired to return home and start his own business. He lived and worked in London during his adolescence, taking a job as a lift-worker in the prestigious Savoy Hotel. The son of an Italian merchant, Gucci was well-versed in all things business by the time he opened his own saddlery in 1920. Guccio Gucci was born in Florence in 1881.
